Syria: City of Raqqa – Damaged and Vacated Areas – Participatory Mapping Exercise – 04/07/2017

On 6 June 2017, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced the start of an offensive aiming at taking control of Ar-Raqqa city from the group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). As of 6 July, it is estimated that just 20,000-50,000 people remain within the city, which has suffered increasing damage, reportedly primarily caused by airstrikes, indirect artillery fire and other conflict related gunfire. However, residents are rarely living in damaged shelters due to the abundance of abandoned homes.

This map illustrates the areas in Ar-Raqqa city that were destroyed or heavily damaged, as well as those which have been vacated or where only few people remain.


South Sudan: Jonglei State – Composite Food Security Indicators – June 2017

Three months after the declaration of famine in Unity State, South Sudan, despite improvements most likely resulting from of a rapid up-scale of humanitarian assistance in Central Unity, the humanitarian situation has continued to worsen across the rest of the country.  Jonglei State, in particular, has experienced declining food access levels since January 2017.

This map illustrates the areas in Jonglei State more likely to be food insecure, basing the estimation on the data collected between April and May 2017.


Syria: Al Hol Refugee / IDP Camp – General Infrastructure – May 2017

This map provides an overview of the general infrastructure and services available in Al Hol camp as of May 2017. Located in Syria’s Al-Hasakeh governorate, the camp is divided into six areas, called ‘Phases’, three of which are fully built and in use. The larger two of the three phases house Iraqi refugees, who represent 97% of the camp population and come primarily from Ninewa governorate, whilst one phase houses Syrian IDPs (3% of camp population), coming primarily from Deir-ez-Zor, Al-Hasakeh and Ar-Raqqa governorates.


Nigeria: Borno State, Bakasi Camp – General Infrastructure – May 2017

REACH opened a new country mission in Nigeria in April 2017 to support the humanitarian response to the Lake Chad Crisis. This map, one of the first REACH outputs for Nigeria, provides an overview of the general infrastructure and demographics in Bakasi Camp, Borno State.

Famine in South Sudan: understanding food insecurity in Unity State

Following the declaration of famine in Leer and Mayendit Counties in Unity State, REACH teams in South Sudan calculated the areas more likely to be food insecure, in order to support a humanitarian response targeted towards the populations in most urgent need. 

Below are two maps produced on 22 February 2017, which show the extent of food insecurity in Unity State and in the neighbouring Jonglei State.

 

 


Ukraine: Mapping IDP Displacement and Returns in Eastern Ukraine

REACH IM Hub in Ukraine produced two maps to support their assessments on displaced populations in Eastern Ukraine. The first one illustrates IDP Displacement from conflict areas toward Government-Controlled Areas (GCA) from March 2016 to June 2016. The second one illustrates IDP returns from GCA to their areas of origin as per 2016.

Iraq: Zelikan IDP Camp General Infrastructure

REACH teams in Iraq are regularly assessing displacements around Mosul area following the beginning of the so-called Mosul Offensive. Here is a map illustrating the general infrastructure of one of those formal camps established to respond to large displacements occurring in the area, the Zelikan IDP Camp.

Jordan: Za’atari Camp General Infrastructure

REACH is regularly providing maps on the Za’atari Refugee Camp in Jordan, which are widely used by humanitarian partners and actors working there to better inform their planning and action. One of those maps is showing the General Infrastructure of the camp, and is now updated as of November 2016. You can also access the Arabic version of the map, and a close-up per district.
